Faraja: The Story of a Place Built on Comfort

Our Partnership with New Faraja Orphanage Centre, Tanzania

In Swahili, the word faraja means comfort. It is a word that carries weight, warmth and shelter and the quiet assurance that someone is there. And when you learn the story of New Faraja Orphanage Centre in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, you understand immediately why its founders chose that name.

How It Began

New Faraja began in 2016 not as a formal institution, but as an act of love. Two founders opened the doors of their home to three children who had nowhere else to go, no family, no safety net, no certainty about tomorrow. Armed with nothing but compassion and conviction, they began building something that would grow far beyond what they could have imagined.

What started with three children now serves 120. Today, New Faraja is a full residential care centre providing safety, education, healthcare, and the consistent, loving presence that every child deserves. It is a home.

What Life at New Faraja Looks Like

The children at New Faraja range in age and background, but they share a common experience: they came with very little, and they are being given so much more than material support. They are being given stability. Routine. Adults who show up for them. A community that knows their name.

Education is a cornerstone of life at New Faraja. Children are supported through schooling with the goal of giving each of them access to a future that breaks the cycle of poverty. Healthcare is provided on-site, because a child cannot learn or grow if they are not well. And every day, they receive nourishment — meals that are more than food, but a symbol that they matter.

Our Partnership

Harmony and Jay Foundation became a proud partner of New Faraja in 2022, before we were even a formal foundation. What began as a personal commitment became an organisational one. Since then, we have worked to raise funds that directly support the children in their care, contributing to education, daily needs, and the operational costs that keep the centre running.

We see New Faraja not just as a recipient of support, but as a model of what is possible when people choose to act. The founders of New Faraja did not wait for someone else to solve the problem. They opened their home. We think about that a lot.

Our Vision for New Faraja

New Faraja is now at full capacity, and the need has never been greater. One of our most important priorities is helping to build a brand new orphanage facility — one that expands capacity and opens its doors to more children who are currently without a home or family support. This is not a distant dream. Land has already been purchased, and construction can begin.

120 children is extraordinary. But there are more who need a faraja of their own. We intend to help find them one.
